Q & A with John Marling March

Q: Where do you get your story ideas?

A: Like many authors, from my own life experience. My protagonist is a young war veteran, a police detective, and someone who is dealing with both physical wounds and psychological wounds. Although I am no longer young, I am a retired Army Ranger and a veteran of both Vietnam and Operation Iraqi Freedom. I also spent twenty years as a police officer, including time in patrol, as a plainclothes street crimes officer, and as a criminal investigations detective.

Q: Anything in particular about your award-winning RPLA entry that you’d like to share?

A: The Perdiccas Scroll, the first Miles Cannon Mystery, deals with the murder of a man who saved the life of the protagonist, Miles Cannon. When Army Reservist Cannon returns to active duty in Iraq to investigate the death, he must deal with the dangers of finding a murderer in the middle of a war zone. He will also become embroiled in a desert mystery that is thousands of years old.

Q: Who do you credit with inspiring your writing?

A: Above all, my wife, Debbie, who inspires everything I do. I am also inspired by those I have known in the military and in law enforcement. Many of them made the ultimate sacrifice. Others still deal with the physical and psychological injuries of their service. As I follow Miles Cannon in his troubled, adventurous life, perhaps others will find inspiration in his determination to remain a warrior, no matter what challenges he must face.

Q: Any tips for new writers?

A: I would give the same advice I have given to my children and my grandchildren. Never quit, never give up, and never surrender, no matter what difficulties you may face.
