Need a New Activity for Your Writers Group?

Are your writers group meetings getting stale, routine? What if your speaker doesn’t show up?

Try a new activity.

Every issue of The Florida Writer (the official magazine of the Florida Writers Association) contains writing prompts. Issue a prompt during a meeting and allow  time to write, perhaps 20 – 30 minutes. Then provide time for a read-around (volunteers only, no pressure) and brief feedback Since the pieces are fresh, not polished, it would be appropriate to elicit positive feedback only.

Of course there won’t be time to finish the piece or get detailed feedback, but there will be enough time for them to generate new work they can polish at home and time to receive a boost of encouragement. They will have an opportunity to practice their craft and can leave the meeting with new work in hand—a clear accomplishment.

Here’s some extra incentive.

FWA members who respond to the prompt with a well-written piece and submit to the magazine can be selected for publication. Fiction, nonfiction, and poetry are all welcomed.

Wouldn’t it be great to see your group well represented in the magazine?

You can find always find the prompts/submission guidelines in the latest issue of the magazine or on  The Florida Writer page on FWA’s website. But I’ve also attached the latest submission requirements here.
