Editors Helping Writers: A Service for Members

editors helping writers

Editors Helping Writers links Florida Writers Association (FWA) members with qualified, ethical manuscript editors, all of whom are also members of FWA.

All editors adhere to Chicago style, preferred by book publishers. For that reason, Editors Helping Writers accepts only fiction and nonfiction books and short stories. The editing service does not accept or edit business materials such as business proposals, advertisements, web copy, or brochure copy.

The $129.50 fee listed below covers the first 7,500 words for book-length manuscripts. It not only gets you an edit and evaluation of that first portion but also gives you the opportunity to decide if the editor we’ve chosen for you is the right one for you and your manuscript. When your editor returns that first edited portion, he or she will quote you a price for the remainder. You and your editor can then move on from there, working directly together.

How the Service Works

  • For potential Collection entries, we line edit the whole submission.
  • For book-length manuscripts, we accept only the first 7,500 words. We line edit that first portion and include a brief evaluation that may include suggestions for further improvement.
  • We do not, however, offer intense developmental editing services. If you wish developmental editing, discuss that possibility with the editor who has worked on the first portion of your book.

What to Expect

  • The coordinator will acknowledge receipt of your manuscript and give you the name of your editor. Your editor will send you an estimated return date, which will always be within eight weeks for book manuscripts and within two weeks for Collection manuscripts.
  • A qualified editor will line edit your submitted portion for errors following The Chicago Manual of Style (preferred by books publishers) and return your submission by email by the estimated return date.
  • For book manuscripts, your editor will include a brief evaluation on the elements of the manuscript, whether fiction or nonfiction. For book manuscripts, your editor may offer to edit the remainder of the manuscript and quote you a price. If you agree, you pay the remainder directly to your editor, and your editor will donate a portion to FWA for providing the lead.
