Weird Characters, Strange Places and Tough Times: Writing New Southern Gothic

Traditional Southern Gothic literature has earned its place in the literary canon through classic works by authors like William Faulkner, Harper Lee, Carson McCullers, Tennessee Williams, and Flannery O’Conner. We’ll discuss how current writers are rediscovering this fascinating sub-genre dealing with disenfranchised voices in warped communities—not necessarily set in the American South. This workshop examines several much-beloved Southern Gothic works, moves into current examples, and ends with prompts for new material of your own that embodies some of the characteristics of the Southern Gothic Revival.

Attendees will learn:

  • The elements of traditional Southern Gothic style
  • How current writers are updating the genre
  • Where to submit your Southern Gothic work for possible publication
