History

history of the florida writers association
The Florida Writers Association’s first ten years as told by its founders and members

From an inauspicious beginning in 2001 around a kitchen table, a few friends took the concept of “Writers Helping Writers,” and then, as Doug Houck, editor of the Florida Writers Association’s first history book writes, “…plunged boldly into the formidable task of organizing.”

Within ten years, the Florida Writers Association had turned it into a professional organization with more than 1,000 members from every corner of the state of Florida as well as other states and the Virgin Islands.

As Dr. Houck phrases it, “The Florida Writers Association has become a fine tapestry of activity, service, and voices.” FWA continues to grow and encompassing some fifty chapters, two writing competitions, annual anthologies, a renowned annual writers conference, some half dozen mini-conferences annually, and a program for youth writers.

Florida Writers Foundation

The Florida Writers Foundation, Inc (FWF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation formed to promote literacy, is a sister organization of the Florida Writers Association (FWA), and the two groups have many volunteers in common.

FWF volunteers have made a difference by visiting elementary schools for reading days, sponsoring poetry contests, donating books to under-privileged schools, and contributing funds to middle school writing contests.

FWA helps the Florida Writers Foundation raise funds by hosting a silent auction during its annual Florida Writers Conference. Every year, another fundraiser,  the Florida Writers Foundation Celebrity Workshop, takes place right before the conference.
